RAVE Review: Angelfall (Spoiler and Spoiler Free)

Nice wing span.

So, I'd like to know something: why is there not a huge, GIANT fandom for this book? Hmm? Like, what the heck. WHAT. THE. HECK.

The ENTIRE book was fantastic from start to finish. THE. ENTIRE. BOOK. When the heck does that even happen? Like, never.

FINALLY, we have a book where the female lead is an actual bad ass and just doesn't talk about being one chapter after chapter.

FINALLY, a book that actually gives us a realistic view of angels.

FINALLY, a book that gives us a bad ass look at Nephilim. *cough cough*, they're not demon hunters, fools!

FINALLY, dialogue that makes me like all the characters, and actually makes me laugh, and is ACTUALLY what teenagers say. So often, I read a book and I'm like...NO. NO. NO. NO.
NO.

I mean, can it really be hard to write angels right? No, but...there are SO MANY that suck butts. SO MANY.

BUT ANYWAYS, let's dive into my review of Angelfall, by Susan Ee.

SPOILER FREE

But...what's it about?
The story follows a girl named Penryn, who is trying to survive, along with her sister and her mother, after angels of the apocalypse swooped down on to humanity and basically ended the world. BUTT HOLES. Anyways, all is going sort of okay until Penryn's sister, while Penryn is trying to aid an angel whose wings were ripped off, is taken by the angels. So, Penryn joins forces with the enemy angel whose wings were ripped off, and together they search for her sister. Crazy ass chaos soon to follow.

Penryn
Team Penryn all the way. Like I mentioned before, she just doesn't chat about being a bad ass, she actually is one.

And I have no doubt she'll continue to be one throughout the series. But, what I liked about Penryn, is that she had actual feelings about things. She wasn't just emotionless. She wanted to find her sister, and she wouldn't stray from the path. And the god damn world she was living in was freaking dangerous as hell. She's a fighter, and an awesome one. I really don't understand why there isn't a fandom for this book. Like a huge fandom. We could all learn a lot from Penryn. Like, don't just say it, do it. And the banter with Raffe, the enemy angel she teams up with, is fantastic. Hand clapping all around for this book.

Raffe
He's the enemy angel who had his wings torn off. And, also, I'm in love with him. Raffe is tough, bad ass, and, well, super hot. Obviously, he's an angel. His dialogue with Penryn is just thumbs up everywhere. I love that we get to follow two characters around who actually entertained and didn't bore the crap out of me. And Raffe is hiding so many things! Like...so many. He's a mystery, until you find out a few things about him towards the end.

Penryn's Mom
Penryn's mom is a schizophrenic. SHE'S CRAZY. Like, maybe she is a psychopath crazy. Literally, I was afraid of her mom. Her mom added another dark element to Penryn's life, one that I'm really curious of. And Penryn's father left them. But, yeh, you won't know whether you should cheer her mom on or just be freaked out by her. I was in the middle, haha.

The World
Obviously, this took place on earth, but the whole world after was just so awesome, but, like, sad. Street gangs rule, and it's dangerous for everyone. There's this whole angels club thing, and it's totally creepy, but it's super believable. And then we get to the Nephilim. OH. MY. Or, at least, what may be Nephilim. I'm shuddering just thinking about it. But the world was realistic. It was dark, violent, and super scary. Exactly how it should be if something like that happened to the earth.

Overall Thoughts
This book was a 5 STAR book out of 5 stars. It deserves so much more praise. If you want to read what the world would really be like after some sort of apocalypse, this is it. It's totally dark and creepy. It's everything you'd expect and more. And the whole angels destroying the earth thing, and they don't even know why....WHAT THE HECK! The book was great because it didn't give too much away, and I love that. It kept me drooling for the second book. READ IT. READ IT NOW.

SPOILERS

Raffe is an archangel! Paige is a sewn-together human eater now! Raffe has a thing for Penryn! ANGEL POLITICS! ANGEL'S EXPERIMENTING ON HUMAN CHILDREN! Angels using women as arm candy, and using them for experiments. OH. MY GOD. Scorpion hybrid angels.

WHAT. DID. I. READ.

Creepy. Creepy. But good. I'm weird. I'm also in love with Raffe because, well, I am.

Raffe was also anti human/angel relationships. But now he is totally falling for Penryn. And then Raffe gets BAT WINGS. That's freaking cool. I dig that. Just makes him way hotter. I'm weird.

And, and, and the Fred and George guys. Yes. Thank you!

This book had too much of everything. And I loved it so much.

I literally can't even collect my thoughts, so I'm gonna go now.

LLAP, booknerdians.

Lots of 💙and 🍵,

Liz
