Magonia Book Review
What did I just read? This was really weird...😟
But so am I. So, we're even. 😃
What the hell am I even talking about?
Wait. Hey, how's it going, bird people?
Wait, what? You heard me. Bird people.
They already existed before this book, btw.
But what the shit am I talking about?
Magonia, by Maria Headley
Let me start by saying, I like weird stuff. It's good for the soul and shows a butt load of imagination.
Thank you, SpongeBob. ✌
So when I read this book, I said to myself, "oh, okay, yes, I like this I think."
But what's it about?
Weird shit. No, just kidding. Good, weird shit. 😏
There's this girl named Aza who is apparently dying from some breathing issue. Come to find out, when she is on the verge of dying in the human world, she gets whisked away to the land of Magonia high above the clouds. A land of bird people. So, that's cool and all. But her friend, and also love interest, Jason is left behind and totally devastated. And there are pirates and bad guys. That pretty much sums it up.
So, what did I rate this?
3 Stars out of 5. BUT WHY?
Well...
I hated Aza. She was the worst main character I've ever been tortured to read about. Ouch. I hated her so much that she couldn't even save the story line for me. She was annoying, and tried to be all Rick Riordan funny, but definitely wasn't. The majority of the time, I was just rolling my eyes at her. Hm.
And when a book starts out with such a stupid POV, it puts a bad taste in your mouth for the majority of the book. I mean, I was dying to skim over Aza's stuff because she was so annoying to me. Yeh, you're sick. No, you don't have to be such a bitch. Honestly felt like it was a John Green kind of thing. No offense. Just don't dig that stuff. Sorry.
But then there was Jason.
Seriously, this whole book should have been about Jason.
When you get to Jason's perspective, you can finally breathe again. If only Aza was around Jason more often. 😵
He's funny, super-genius-I-will-be-a-villain-someday smart, and just adorable. I adored him. And I wanted more of him in the book, like the whole book. Oh well. You live and you learn.
But let's talk about the bird people.
Like I said before, bonus points for creativity.
But what the hell? They are basically the Rito from The Legend of Zelda. Which is fine, BUUUUUUUT, well it could've been done way better. Scratch the bird people. I get it, the ideas creative. But scratch the bird people.
I was expecting treasure planet.
But what was I given? Talking birds.
😤
Yes, Hulk, sum it up.
Conclusion
Had it not been for Jason, a decent plot line, and creativity, this book would have been a fail. But it got the 3 stars because, well, Jason. Not because of bird people. SERIOUSLY, R-I-T-O-S.
Give me Treasure Planet or give me nothing at all.
✌
Lot's of 💙 and 🍵,
Liz
