Three Dark Crowns Spoiler Free Review
"Three dark sisters all fair to be seen, two to devour, and one to be Queen."
Um, yeh, so I REALLY enjoyed the idea behind this book. I mean, die hard, totally-excited-to-read enjoyment. And, I mean, it didn't disappoint me. I'd rank this in at a solid 4 stars out of 5.
And here is just why...
BUT. FIRST.
What's it about?
Basically, royal triplets are born, torn apart when they are very young, and raised in separate kingdoms: the poisoners, the naturalists, and the elemental's. Poisoners are immune to all kinds of poisons, and have been the reigning power for centuries; naturalists obviously are in touch with nature and have an animal chum they are bonded with when they are young; elemental's control the elements. Katharine, sweet and shy, is a poisoner, but she is having difficulty with the poison control and consuming poisons. Arsinoe is supposed to be a naturalist but has no animal chum and can't do anything. Mirabella, the elemental, is said to be the strongest and most beautiful of them all.
But only one queen can rule. Commence the bad assery of these three being brought up from young children to know that they must kill each other so one can reign. Pretty crappy world, huh?
So, let's talk about the three sisters.
Katharine
I rooted for Katharine from the beginning. She was the true underdog of the story. She couldn't eat any poison, she was scarred and abused by her disgusting keeper, and she was innocent. I adored Katharine for this. She was naive and never violent. Which made her a little out of place in the poisoner world (haha, you've gotta read the book because this is totally not a spoiler review...although maybe I'll do one). So in comes Pietyr. I really like Pietyr, a lot. And I totally understand why he did what he did at the end...NO SPOILERS. Promise. Pietyr is sexy, and charming, and is placed there to help Katharine grow a backbone and control her poisoner abilities. Pietyr obviously grows googly eyes for her, and well, I just loved reading Katharine's and Pietyr's perspective each time. There was sort of a Wuthering Heights thing going on, and I'm always hot for that.
But, Katharine's my queen, regardless of how charming and awesome Arsinoe was, Katharine, in my mind, reigned supreme. There was just something about her that drew me to her side.
Arsinoe
I really liked Arsinoe, a lot. Just like Katharine she's pretty much sucking with her powers. No animal chum, no naturalist gifts...everything's sucking for Arsinoe, and the people who live around her pretty much hate her because of it. Not everyone, of course, but most people think she'll be the first to die in the battle of the sisters. Arsinoe has a best friend named Jules, who is pretty powerful when it comes to naturalists, and even has a mountain line as her animal chum. Good for her. Bad for Arsinoe. Everyone doubts Arsinoe, but Arsinoe's awesome because she has that middle finger sticking attitude towards them.
And then there's the dude Jules loves, Joseph. Yeh, Joseph. So, he and Jules have a thing, but something happens to him with magic and...well...I totally feel bad for the boy...but really? I was even hurt but what he'd done. This is why I need to do a spoiler review of this book. BECAUSE. ALL. THE. FEELS. And when the end of the book comes, you finally understand why Arsinoe sucks as a naturalist. It may be something you pick up towards the beginning. But I was like "holy shit...holy shit." Yup, I enjoyed it. BUT JULES. Jules was a personal favorite of mine. She was tough and awesome, and yeh. Yeh.
Mirabella
Maybe it's because she's supposed to be the toughest one. Maybe it's because of what happened with Joseph. But, I never truly connected with Mirabella. I don't know why. Maybe I felt like the story was trying to make us not connect with her, so we felt more bad for Jules. Idk. But Mirabella is the elemental. She tries to run away from home. Ah. Maybe that's what I don't like. The whole runaway queen thing. Anyways, I didn't like her and I hope she loses in the end. Not really sorry about that.
The Plot
I loved it. I know that a lot of people didn't because they said it was slow because of the politics of the book, but I love that stuff. I love the political intrigue of it, and I love the whole three sisters battle to the death concept. It's dark, man. It was written in a way where you want to join one of the sisters sides (KATHARINE FOR LIFE + PIETYR). It was filled with sneaky plotting and wonderful characters. And the fantasy backdrop was awesome and dark.
Conclusion
I would obviously recommend this book to everyone. Maybe dark stories aren't your thing, but still, read it. The variety of characters keeps you emerged in the story. And when you're towards the ending, you'll what-the-heck all over the place from the twists and turns. I'll admit, there are slow parts, but it's mainly due to the politics and plotting. It's rich in political schemes, and hey, it was enjoyable.
Anyways, happy Monday, my booknerdians! I hope you enjoyed my spoiler free review.
