The Great Hunt Spoiler And Non-Spoiler Review
This. Book. Was. The. Best.
Action. Kilts. Steamy romance. Adventure. Brotherhood. Scottish accents you could taste. WHAT? Kilts. Kilts. Kilts. Hm. Notice a pattern there?
So. I'm dying. It's called The Great Hunt, by Wendy Higgins.
Let's get into the review...the 4 star review, by the by.
Spoiler Free
I'm going to have a hard time not spoiling this in the spoiler free section. But I'll try not to.
But what's this fantastic book about?
Glad you asked. Truly. It follows three perspectives: Princess Aerity, Wyneth (Aerity's cousin), and Paxton Seabolt. There's some crazy, killer beast loose in the kingdom, and no one can kill it. So the king decides that whoever kills the beast will have his daughters hand in marriage.
Aerity's pissed. She was always told that she would be able to fall in love and marry, not have some arranged marriage. Totally sucks, man.
And Wyneth. Poor Wyneth. Her true love was the first person who was killed by the beast. The dude she was going to marry. She's depressed and drowning in her sorrows.
And Paxton Seabolt. Paxton Seabolt. Well, I'd marry him. He's that typical moody, rough cut guy, and happens to be an incredible hunter, alongside his little brother Tiern Seabolt. Click the swoon button right now.
Tiern is just so perfect. Yes, I liked Paxton too, but Tiern was adorable. He was the right kind of everything, and instantly likable. I adored him too much. He gave me all the smiles and swoons that I needed. 😊
And just imagine how hot the story gets: warriors from all over the lands come to fight and kill the beast, pitching their tents right in the backyard of the castle.
Um. I want to be in this book.
And then there's Lord Alvi.
He makes me think...why is there not an entire fandom dedicated to this book? Or even the second book? WHAT. THE. HELL.
But back to Alvi. He's massive, muscled, barely wears any clothes at all because the cold doesn't bother him, and has gorgeous hair.
Suddenly I feel really nervous.
AND! AND! He doesn't have feelings for the princess, but instead...dfjkfdfdkjhkjhkhkrh.
Oh, god. I need to get to the spoiler review.
SPOILER REVIEW
Paxton is who Wyneth calls a skirt raiser. Totally into that, btw. And, well, I kind of knew it from the beginning, but Paxton is one of The Lashed. The Lashed are people with strange, magical abilities. People the kingdom hates. OMG. NO. He tries to hide it but eventually...eventually he can't.
There was a scene where I thought Tiern was going to die.
I was nervous as hell, and preparing to cry. I thought to myself, if Tiern dies...
But he didn't. Thank the gods, man.
And then Wyneth and Alvi.
I heard a lot of complaints in the book reviews about them. Hey, jerks, Wyneth was heartbroken and confused. She wanted Breckon back, but he would never come back. She was just looking for love and comfort and thought she would find it with Alvi. And even though Alvi suggested he would be with her even if he married the princess, don't hate me, but I still liked him. SORRY.
Paxton and Aerity. Can. We. Say. TENSION! Too much damn angst. Butiloveit. Iloveitall.
I enjoyed the "relationship" between Paxton and Aerity. Paxton even told Aerity he was one of The Lashed. He even decided that he would kill the beast to marry her. But then Tiern's life was on the line. And it was either save Tiern, or kill the beast. Obviously he saved Tiern. And Alvi killed the beast.
Alvi killed the beast. No. NOOOOOO.
Basically heartbroken. But. Trying. Not. To. Show. It.
So Paxton breaks all of our hearts and runs off with the women warriors. Aerity is left to marry Lord Alvi. Wyneth is heartbroken. Tiern is sad because Paxton, his bro, totally left him.
There is no hope.
The world's all damn shattered and black and white and shit like that.
BUT WAIT.
There's a new beast in town. The wedding is postponed. Maybe Paxton will return?
There's a second book. A second book I won't be reading until February 2018. But, why, you fool? It's already out!
Well...you see, I really like the paperback edition. It feels really good. HAH. Let me explain, please. Book lovers will totally feel me. The covers all soft, the pages have this old time paper feel, and when you swoosh the pages the sound is beautiful.
I'm just over here being a freak, is all. But I have a feeling the hardback edition won't feel the same. So. I'm waiting, alright? And that's cool, I usually won't buy an entire series just because the whole thing is out anyways. I like to space it out for the drama, ya know.
My Conclusion
Loved it. The accents were incredibly gorgeous, the setting was spectacular, and I stayed up until 3 am reading this. YUP. COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. That's usually a sign the books damn good.
So, read it, alright? Get all your swoons out in one sitting.
See ya next time, fellow booknerdians.
✌
Lot's of 💙 and 🍵,
