Recommended Read: Into The Dim

Hey, how's it going?

Today I've got a pretty fun recommended read for you guys: Into the Dim, by Janet B. Taylor.

It's a stunning book, with a stunning cover, and even a gorgeous naked cover.

I just couldn't resist taking as many photos as possible. I love the blue marble look of it.

I don't know about you, but when I buy a hardcover book, I'm always curious about what's underneath. You know, creeper vibes.

BUT ANYWAYS, on to the content of the book.

What's it about?
The book is advertised as a YA version of Outlander, but the only similarity is the time travel, obviously. Anyways, it follows a girl named Hope who goes to Scotland after her mother dies to visit her long, lost, doesn't really remember her, aunt. Her aunt is pretty eccentric, or so Hope has always heard. So, she's off to Scotland, where she finds way more than she bargained for. It turns out her mother was a part of a group of time travelers, but Hope was kept from this. Hope finds herself intertwined in an adventure in the past, and even finding some romance along the way, as well as making friends.

My thoughts on Hope.
Um, well, I didn't like Hope that much. She is home schooled, and is a really sucky representation of someone who is home schooled. And she has all of these fears she whines about a lot. However, some people might like her, I was looking both ways. Either she did something I liked or she did something I was just like "what...".

What I did like about her was that she an unlikely hero, and I can't help but root for the underdog each time. So she had that quality, and when you introduce the love interest, she was a little better to manage. If you're looking for an unlikely hero, Hope is a great lead. I enjoyed the fact that she had an photographic memory. Super cool. Definitely made her interesting and somewhat convenient.

The love interest, Bran Cameron.
So, I did like Bran. He was your classic Englishman. Sweet, sarcastic, and also gentlemanly. But, there's something about him that just isn't right. If you read the book, you may pick this up. He's likely, but also off. And the plot twist with him irritated me.

My thoughts on the book.
If you enjoy time travel, romance, history, and great twists, this is definitely the book for you. The plot twists were definitely the best part, along with side characters that pretty much nail it and make you smile. I like when a book actually has interesting side characters. So often are side characters used just for the convenience of them. I appreciate a book where the side characters are more than that.

Why should you read this?
Hope struggles with a lot of things, making her an unlikely hero to the reader. It's annoying at times, but also refreshing to read about someone who isn't naturally a bad ass. Developed side characters, a plot twist filled time traveling adventure, a villain who is just plain evil, and a lovely little romance sprinkled in.

Well, gotta go chill. LLAP book nerds. ✌

Lots of 💙 and 🍵,

Liz
