Gathering Darkness Non-Spoiler AND Spoiler Review

Hey. How's it going?

I'm in heartbreak city right now. Yes, I did just finish reading Gathering Darkness, by Morgan Rhodes.

Yes. It hurt. It hurt a lot. But kudos to you, author, for making me actually cry. But I shouldn't be surprised. This author's a born character killer. Should have seen it coming. I should have seen it all.

Non-Spoiler.

Let's get this out of the way so I can vent my feelings.

If you aren't familiar with the series and broken hearts, this review isn't for you. This is the third book in the Falling Kingdoms series. And these are books you read in one sitting. Why? Because this happens. Then that happens. Then this happens. Then it's 2 in the morning. YES.

In the series, you follow the perspectives of a few youths who live in three different kingdoms. In the third book, all of the kingdoms have been made into one now. There are a few important characters: Magnus, Jonas, Cleo, Lucia...and...and...Alexius. Yeh. I can feel the damn heartbreak right now.

This third book ripped my soul out of me. And my heart too. Jonas felt like a failure, Magnus wants to be like his ass hole father, Cleo is married to Magnus, and Lucia is struggling with her bad ass sorcerer powers, with Alexius taking on a human form to help her.

The tension though. It just builds and builds and builds until you feel like you are going to explode. And yes, I did explode. Internally. Otherwise, it would be damn messy. Everyone is after the Kindred, and Magnus and Cleo have this angsty shit going on that I love. Oh, and I do love Magnus A LOT. Surprisingly, I've always been conflicted when it comes to Cleo. Sometimes I like her, and sometimes I don't. I understand political battles and that they are lengthy, but jeeeeeez, too lengthy, man!

Lucia never gets a lot of positive feedback from readers, but I like her. I'm all for that person who struggles to control her raging powers. And I'm all for Lucia and Alexius. I shipped them so damn much. So when the book was over, I re-read some of those last parts, like, "what, nooooooo! Noooo! Noooooo!"

Which brings me to the SPOILER section...

SPOILER REVIEW

They killed my husband.

Also known as Alexius. How. Dare. This. Happen.

I shipped Alexius and Lucia so hard. But in the end, Alexius was being controlled by some bitchy sorceress to kill Lucia. Even though he loved her. They were going to run off and get married. But no. No one can ever be happy. Instead, Alexius, fighting the control, stabs himself in the heart so he doesn't kill Lucia. NO! HELL NO! And I was a fool. Thinking he would just come back to life. I should've known better. Morgan Rhodes obviously has no mercy. I mean, I appreciate that, but it doesn't mean that it won't hurt.

So, let's recover my feelings. What the hell was going on with Magnus and Cleo? Well.....Magnus admits, internally, that he loves Cleo.

Magnus, my poor, dark, broken Magnus. He's so busy trying to be like his jerk dad. Why? Because his dads a twisted, abusive ass hole. But anyways, I loved the banter between Magnus and Cleo, and when they kissed at that ladies house, instant swoon.

But I've rooted for Magnus since the beginning. I understood that he was just a broken dude. And, if anything, I really want good things to happen for him.

And then Nic. Nic having feelings for Ashur, and then Ashur being killed by his psychopathic sister. I hate her. I mean I really hate her. Right when it seemed like Nic was figuring out his feelings, she goes and kills Ashur. WOW. OKAY. Real ass hole move. I hope she dies in the end, but that's just me. Stupid Amara.

And then there was Jonas. I've always liked Jonas. His brothers death started all the shit. Poor guy. And I mean it. Jonas has gone through hell and back. But at least he got to save Lysandra. And Lysandra is a total bad ass. Love her forever. And shipping her and Jonas all the way.

Conclusion
Even though I experienced butt loads of heartache when reading this book, it was obviously one awesome book. A book that connects you to its characters so deeply. If you haven't started reading the Falling Kingdoms series, I definitely recommend. Be warned. It'll really pull at your emotions. Every book did that to me. This more than all of them.

Well, it's time for me to drown in my own tears right about now.

Lot's of 💙and 🍵,

Liz
