Recommended Read: Wintersong, by S. Jae-Jones
Commence the weakness of the knees, reader nerds, because today I'm recommending a book I died over: Wintersong, by
S. Jae-Jones.
Let me start out by saying, Hey, how's it going?
Sometimes Monday's feel like a groggy mess. And even more so when you're sick. But that's beside the point.
Back to talking about Wintersong.
Wintersong was one of my most anticipated releases of this year. I pre-ordered it, received it the day it was released, and finished it in the same day. Also, this is known as having no life. Totally cool though.
But anyways. I was extremely excited about this book. But why? Because it was advertised as a Labyrinth retelling. STOP. As in David Bowie Labyrinth? Yes. As in that.
What? Yes. Yes to everything. 😐
But, other than hot goblin king retelling's, what's it about?
Thank goodness I planned on actually telling you. Go on and sit down. Simply put, it's about a girl named Liesl who has heard stories about the Goblin King her entire life. About how evil and beautiful he is. Obviously. But Liesl's eighteen and all grown up now, so obviously she tries not to care about childish things like the Goblin King. Not when she has to set aside her dreams of pursuing her music and instead help run her parents inn.
But then her sister is captured by the Goblin King. Also known as when the story actually gets good. Hah, just kidding of course. Liesl has to play the Goblin King's dark and sexy games to win her sister back before it's too late.
Mmm. Mmm.
So I had pretty high expectations of this book, and most of them were met. I gave the book a solid 5 stars, itching on knocking off one just because of Liesl's personality. Be warned. She is the typical, "I'm so ugly, blah, blah, blah girl." However, in this case, the book really does describe her as ugly. So maybe that's why I couldn't knock a start off, or at least half a star. She just says she's ugly way too damn much. I get, it's her insecurity, but jeez, have just a tiny ounce of dignity.
I counted the moments until the Goblin King made himself known. And let me tell you, you won't be disappointed. I would say that he's the best part of the book, as he should be. He's beautiful in a creepy way, dark and mysterious, tortured, sexy, and everything you'd expect the Goblin King to be.
Swoon worthy as hell.
And remember, this isn't YA, it's New Adult. Which basically means there's some sexiness in it. It's been a long time since we've seen the Goblin King, so we totally deserved it.
I also liked how the book had a classic feel to it. I'm not sure why, but when I read it I kept thinking of Wuthering Heights or Pride and Prejudice. There was just a really elegant writing style that not many people still use. It had me glamoured at the beginning.
The Goblin King's kingdom was pretty awesome too. It was earthy and just as evil and enchanting as you'd expect it to be. There's also a ballroom scene that gave me major Labyrinth vibes. It's stunning and weird at the same time.
Conclusion:
Read it. Read it now. If you want to fall into the dark world of the Goblin King, here's your chance.
Happy Reading, book nerds!
Lot's of 💙 and 🍵,
Liz
